Cabin air filters exist for some vehicles for standard duty air filtration; however, conventional replaceable cartridge filters are not able to operate for severe duty applications, such as smoke or dust or dirt in off-road wildland firefighting, utility construction, or any ground soil construction applications involving heavy large particles in large quantities. Harmful particles are especially present in the smoky and dusty conditions of wildland firefighting and the disruption of soil as in road or excavation construction or off road driving in silty soils.
True air scrubbing filtration units have been used in military use with CBRNE. Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) capabilities. These can be very expensive. Some fire apparatus manufacturers are offering air scrubbers or HEPA filtration as an option for structural firefighting apparatus and are added into the cabin and air large and expensive. They are also installed on fireline wildland bulldozers at a cost of thousands of dollars per unit. A similar product is used in the farming industry for equipment spraying pesticides.
